About the exhibition

Life stories is about the rollercoaster life of Frankie Chang who is a self-taught artist that used self-invented technique for his works and who was once a hardened criminal that spent 20 years behind bar.

The reason for choosing to draw portraits of successful people is to preserve their success stories with his drawings and inspire youth to learn from each of them. Frankie wants to inspire today’s youths to lead successful lives and also to reach out to ex-prisoners.
His art keeps him from committing crime and also helps him to move ahead in life. His advice for young people with potential is don’t be like him, waste it in prison and wait till you are old before pursuing your dream.

About the Artist

At 5, Frankie was abandoned by his parents and lived in an orphanage and he led a life of petty crime and illegal activities. When he was caught in 1999 for drug trafficking and given 9 years in jail – he knew that he can’t beat the law. Just 2 weeks after he left prison, he was diagnosed with 3rd stage colorectal cancer and now he had to wear a stoma bag to drain urine and faeces.
He lives in a one room HDB flat and sleep on the floor but has a large drawing table with painting adorned the walls. He makes an average of $1000 a month by selling his painting and most of his earning is used for his medical bills.
He had also participated in the Arts Street 2009 and The Arts House 2009 Black & White Portrait Exhibition. Northeast Community Development Council also helps to auction some of his artworks to help Frankie to raise fund for his medical fee. He also participated in the Race against Cancer by Singapore Cancer Society (SCS) and presented a portrait to the Minister for Finance & Transport-Lim Hwee Hua.

His clients include VIPs and Goodwood Park Hotel which commissioned 10 paintings. He had draw portrait of MM Lee Kuan Yew, President S R Nathan, and many affluent figures and political leaders around the world.
