About the exhibition:
Fans of Hans Christian Andersen and the Grimm Brothers will delightin reacquainting themselves with scenes from their childhoodmemories. A tribute to centuries-old printmaking techniques, LongAgo and Far Away showcases a set of contemporary woodcuts and uniqueprints by two talented Indonesian artists, Daniel "Timbul" CahyaKrisna and Francisco Panca.
Though widely practiced in the past, the number of woodcut printartists has dwindled in number. The sheer physical labor and longerprocess contribute to the decrease. In an attempt to re-examine theartistic value of print works, this exhibition features 8 pairs oforiginal woodcuts and their corresponding mirror image prints.Executed manually in carved wood, the carved images are transferredto canvases, which are then painted over, resulting in uniquepieces.
Refraining from agressive subject elements, both artists whograduated from ISI Yogyakarta are known to incorporate fairy taleand comic characters in their works. The characters symbolize reallife personas. Subtly, these elements are used to comment on variouscontemporary Indonesian social and political issues; and the hiddendanger that lurks beneath these innocent looking figures. WhileFrancisco's works make fun of the uncomfortably comfortable stateexperienced by urban dwellers, candid and unpretentious Danielchooses to inspire art lovers of all ages with hope, and to drawupon their childhood dreams for a better tomorrow.
